Let Dianne Feinstein serve her full term
At one point she was my choice for President. Feinstein has earned a bipartisan right to serve her elected term.
If I could have waved a magic wand in 2008, the elected President of the United States would have been Dianne Feinstein.
The multi-term Senator and former San Francisco mayor had by then earned a reputation of working with people "across the aisle" to advance positive steps for the country.
Now as the 89-year-old recovers from a reported case of shingles, some Democrats want her to resign her position.
This would be a disaster for the voters in the Golden State.
California voters elected her in 2018 with about 54% of the vote against a runner-up who is embroiled in a racist incident in which he allowed clearly racist comments to go unchallenged.
California voters elected Feinstein for a six-year term, and she should do everything in her power to retain her Senate position.
If Feinstein were to resign now, it would allow hypocritical and self-absorbed California Gov. Gavin Newsom to name her replacement, who would then serve as U.S. Senator for the next 18 months.
He could ostensibly (gulp) name himself.
Why do Feinstein critics demand her resignation? So they can work with Newsom to hand-select the next Senator from California. Once someone is named Senator, it would be increasingly difficult to beat them in an election.
I have regularly voted for Feinstein for the US Senate, and I would hate to see Newsom -- one of the worst governors in the country -- be put his thumb even further on the scales of the 2024 Senate election.
I hope people across the political spectrum allow this elected Senator to serve out her term, even if it is difficult. And. yes, even if it means (gulp) Adam Schiff could be the next Senator from California.
That's simply a dynamic the voters will have to contend with.
But it should be their choice, not the choice of political actors and bureaucrats.
But is she also expected to show up for in person work over the next 18 months? I hope she recovers.
